Pre-Approved ADU Plans Program

The City of Hawthorne is pleased to offer a streamlined plan approval process for homeowners looking to build a Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) under California’s AB 1332 law.

AB 1332 requires local agencies to develop a program for the preapproval of ADU plans.

Under Hawthorne's Pre-Approved ADU Plans Program, homeowners will be able to select from a series of three pre-approved, code-compliant ADU constructions plans. This program reflects Hawthorne's commitment to addressing California's housing shortage and aims to reduce pre-construction costs by simplifying the permit process.

Residents can download digital copies of the full sets of plans above. Residents will need to have a site plan prepared to submit along with their selected plan set and submit a permit application though Hawthorne's Citizen Self Service portal. While the Pre-Approved ADU plans will generally eliminate the need for a plan check to determine compliance with building codes, this does not eliminate the need for obtaining an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) building permit, and other review and permit requirements such as grading and drainage, other utilities, or fire sprinklers, if necessary.
