HAWTHORNE, Calif., December 22 – The City of Hawthorne has taken swift and deliberate action to ensure continuity of operations and safeguard public funds following the recent federal indictment of elected City Treasurer Marie Poindexter-Hornback. The alleged conduct outlined in the federal indictment is related to Poindexter-Hornback’s employment with a previous private-sector employer and does not involve city funds.

The City and Poindexter-Hornback have formalized an agreement confirming her voluntary leave of absence. Under the terms of the agreement, Hawthorne’s Finance Director, Felice Lopez, has assumed all treasurer duties to ensure uninterrupted financial oversight. Felice Lopez has been with the City of Hawthorne for over 20 years and has provided outstanding service to the organization throughout her tenure.

After careful review and internal discussions, staff has identified no concerns related to this matter. The treasurer does not have access to city accounts or city offices. In addition, the City has retained an independent audit firm to conduct a forensic audit to further ensure transparency and accountability.

“The City has moved quickly to address this situation and put safeguards in place,” City Attorney David Caceres said. “Hawthorne residents should know that their city government is functioning normally and that we are paying close attention as this process unfolds.”

The City of Hawthorne remains committed to maintaining public trust and ensuring the continued stability and integrity of financial operations. For more information, please contact City Manager Vontray Norris at, vnorris@cityofhawthorne.org
