HAWTHORNE, Calif., February 3, 2025 – The City of Hawthorne has unveiled its strategic priorities for 2025, including projected first-quarter goals and key events. These initiatives align with the City’s long-term vision to provide exceptional service to Hawthorne residents and address pressing challenges.
Strategic Priorities for 2025
Economic Development
Supporting a strong business climate remains a top priority for the City of Hawthorne. By focusing on retaining and supporting local businesses, the City aims to build a solid economic foundation that drives growth and sustainability. This approach is designed to generate the additional revenue needed to enhance the quality of services provided to the community.
Addressing Homelessness
The City remains committed to compassionate solutions for homelessness, and will be conducting its annual point in time count on February 20. Hawthorne will expand programs that provide essential resources and support to unhoused residents, aiming to improve quality of life across the community.
Capital Projects
Major projects planned for 2025 include constructing a new City Hall and Civic Center, a new City Yard and an expanded Senior Center. These initiatives aim to prepare Hawthorne for future growth and global events such as the Olympics, Super Bowl and World Cup. Construction is set to begin this year.
Parking Solutions
A task force will address the City’s longstanding parking challenges. Beginning in late January, the group will propose comprehensive policies to improve parking while adhering to state regulations.
Projected Goals for the First Quarter
Community Engagement and Staff Development
The City held an all-hands meeting and staff training in January to foster leadership and growth.
New resources will support workforce development, while stakeholder engagement and updates to the “Hawthorne 311” app will enhance community services.
Business Community Engagement
Hawthorne aims to expand participation in its Business Connect program, offer workshops on business planning and financial literacy and launch a mentorship program connecting new entrepreneurs with seasoned business owners.
Major Development Projects
The first quarter will see the groundbreaking of the Kaiser Permanente facility at Hawthorne Mall. The City will also advance phase one of the Downtown Revitalization Plan, install EV charging stations at City facilities and secure additional infrastructure funding.
Compliance and Policy Updates
Cannabis and tobacco compliance strategies will be refined to align with state regulations while preparations for zoning updates and community engagement series will begin.
Branding and Community Engagement
A new trio of hashtags will be launched to enhance the City’s online presence, promote community pride and engage residents in ongoing projects.
Public Engagement and Outreach
The City will promote its hashtag campaign through social media, newsletters and its website. Community events and efforts to grow social media followers will highlight City initiatives and improve outreach.
Challenges and Mitigation Strategies
To balance major development projects and daily operations, the City will employ effective delegation and cross-departmental coordination. For potential delays in state-level approvals, proactive communication and timeline adjustments will be key.
“The first quarter of 2025 is poised to set the stage for continued success in the City of Hawthorne,” said Planning Department Director Gregg McClain. “We’re excited to build momentum toward Hawthorne’s long-term goals and set a strong foundation for the year ahead.”
