HAWTHORNE, CA – October 2, 2024, – This fall, the City of Hawthorne continues to host an impressive array of community events. From seasonal celebrations to resource fairs, there is something for everyone.
Hawthorne’s Lineup of Upcoming Events:
• Touch a Truck: Hawthorne’s Touch a Truck event will take place on October 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Betty Ainsworth Sports Center. This free, interactive family event invites kids to explore over 20 vehicles, including City and construction trucks. In addition to the vehicle displays, families can enjoy arts and crafts, food trucks, and a selection of books to inspire young imaginations. This is a fantastic opportunity for hands-on activities and community fun for the whole family.
• Collection Day: Hawthorne’s Collection Day will take place on October 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Betty Ainsworth Sports Center. This first-come, first-served event offers paper shredding, compost disposal, and e-waste recycling. Proof of Hawthorne residency is required. Residents are encouraged to place boxes in the trunk of their vehicles, and staff will assist with the disposal. For more information, please call (310) 349-2980.
• Senior Resource Fair: Hawthorne will host a Senior Resource Fair on October 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hawthorne City Hall. This event will feature over 25 vendors offering essential resources for seniors, caregivers, and their families, including housing assistance, in-home supportive care, medical services, and emergency preparedness. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with health experts and local organizations, gaining valuable insights to help navigate everyday challenges. The Senior Resource Fair aims to provide essential support to Hawthorne’s senior community.
Highlights of Hawthorne’s Past Events:
• Dodger Day: The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation hosted their annual Dodger Day at Holly Park on August 10 for participants of this year's Dreamteam program. This free event offered health screenings, numerous giveaways, and fun activities for all involved in the baseball program. The ongoing partnership between the City of Hawthorne and the LA Dodgers Foundation continues to offer families essential resources.
• Shakespeare in the Park: In mid-August, The Echo Theater Company partnered with the City of Hawthorne and the Holly Park Neighborhood Association to bring three performances of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” to the Holly Park Amphitheater. The event offered attendees a chance to enjoy this classic comedy in a beautiful outdoor setting.
• Hot August Night Car Show: The Hot August Night Car Show took place on August 30 at Hawthorne City Hall, attracting car enthusiasts from across the county. Attendees enjoyed a stunning display of classic and custom cars, live music, prize drawings, and delicious food from local vendors.
• 9/11 Ceremony: On September 11, Hawthorne City Hall hosted a commemorative ceremony to honor the lives lost and the heroes of 9/11. The event featured speeches from local leaders and moments of silence to pay tribute to those affected. This ceremony reaffirmed Hawthorne’s dedication to remembrance and the enduring strength of the community.
• Senior Center Community Day: The Senior Center Community Day took place on September 24, marking a significant milestone for Hawthorne’s new Senior Center construction project. This long-awaited facility will feature a refurbished 20,000-square-foot space, including a new elevator, ADA-compliant restrooms, accessible walkways, and a landscaped courtyard. Attendees enjoyed the festivities, with activities highlighting the multipurpose rooms for interests such as sewing and pottery. The event was well-attended by local commissioners, underscoring the community's support for the enhancement of services for senior residents.
• Fiesta in the Park: Hawthorne’s Fiesta in the Park took place on September 27 at Hawthorne Memorial Park. Attendees enjoyed a lively evening filled with live music, captivating performances, and light refreshments — all in celebration of Hispanic heritage.
