The City of Hawthorne Takes Proactive Steps in Addressing Homelessness Following Recent Executive Order

HAWTHORNE, CA – DATE, 2024, – The City of Hawthorne continues to proactively address homelessness and enhance support services for its residents. The City offers a comprehensive suite of services, new initiatives, and strategic partnerships aimed at improving the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness.

Key services currently available include:

The Hawthorne Homeless Services Team: Comprised of two outreach Coordinators, a receptionist, a case coordinator, and a supervisor, the team conducts street outreach 4-5 days a week. Their work focuses on building relationships, offering immediate assistance, and establishing trust with individuals experiencing homelessness.

Community Monday: Every Monday, Hawthorne provides vital resources, including case management, housing navigation, and interim housing referrals, along with ID and birth certificate vouchers. The Venice Mobile Health Clinic offers vaccines and chronic care, while the Telehealth Van provides free virtual counseling with licensed social workers. The Core Center focuses on substance abuse prevention and Narcan training. Additionally, partnerships with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health ensure access to classes and referrals for comprehensive community support.

Housing, Case Management, and Counseling Services: The City of Hawthorne offers support including shelter referrals, interim housing, and assistance with permanent housing. Services also cover birth certificates, DMV vouchers, and recovery coordination with LA Centers for Alcohol and Drug Abuse (LA CADA). Free counseling is provided in partnership with OPEN PATHS.

Partnerships and Collaborations: Hawthorne collaborates with various organizations to address homelessness effectively. Key partners include the Hawthorne Police Department, SHARE, Hawthorne Housing Authority, South Bay Cities Council Of Governments (SBCOG), LA CADA, New Star Family Justice Center (NSFJC), Venice Family Clinic, Sanctuary of Hope, and others. These collaborations enhance resource availability and streamline support services.

Bridge of Hope Community Housing: Launched on May 15, 2023, Bridge of Hope Community Housing offers interim housing for 30-180 days. Managed by LA CADA, it has served 40 residents, with 12 moving to permanent housing. Support includes case management, counseling, healthcare, and community activities, funded by various grants and allocations.

Pathway Home Hawthorne: The Pathway Home program, based at LAX Stadium Way Hotel, provides interim housing and support for unhoused residents. Initiatives began in August 2023, with two expansions to other Pathway Homes in October 2023 and February 2024. The hotel has 50 rooms; currently, 36 are occupied by Hawthorne residents. Pathway Home Hawthorne is funded by County Measure H dollars and supported by various partners.

The 2024 homeless count results indicate that there are currently 180 individuals experiencing homelessness in Hawthorne, down from 277 in 2020 (Hawthorne Homeless Services). This data provides a clear picture of the current state of homelessness in the city and will inform ongoing and future initiatives aimed at addressing this critical issue.

The City of Hawthorne invites community members to support these efforts by donating household items at the Homeless Services Office and contributing to local initiatives aimed at alleviating homelessness.
