Hawthorne Veterans Affairs Commission Charter


To support all Veterans within the Hawthorne community by identifying areas of need and providing assistance across various disciplines


Establish objectives to foster support and participation of veterans in related activities, while creating interest and awareness in the general community


Short-term objectives

Establish liaison with local Veterans Service Organizations

  • Present the role of the Veterans Affairs Commission (HVAC) to foster working relationships

Establish a calendar of events within the City and among other relevant groups

  • Sponsor and participate in Memorial, Independence and Veterans Day events

  • Develop a meeting calendar of adjunct events HVAC members could attend and provide feedback

Establish working relationships across political and civic representatives and groups

  • Congressional Representatives, State Assembly and Senate representatives, and local active military officials.

  • Other South Bay community City Councils

Determine the constituency

  • Conduct a census to understand numbers, ages, locations in the community

Ensure an inclusive support role, across spectrum of veterans and time periods served

  • Understand veterans in the local community both active duty and retired

  • Leverage corporate and military aspects within the local community: defense, aerospace, Los Angeles Air Force Base (LA AFB)

Develop a budget and determine necessary financial support

  • Advertise, sponsorship events, conduct surveys

Maintain communications within City, as appropriate

  • Provide updates at Council meetings, as appropriate

Evaluate and determine key focus areas requiring support

  • VA navigation

  • Medical and related

  • PTSD, Counseling

  • Employment

  • Homelessness

Establish a communications plan to create general public support

  • Utilize goodwill support for veterans through donations and participation

Provide assistance and support to neighboring communities to further veteran outreach

  • Expand to encompass South Bay and greater LA involvement
