News for the City of Good Neighbors from City Clerk Huber

Open Studios
Over 20 artists of the Hawthorne Arts Complex will have their art on display for an Open Studios event this Saturday, March 4th from 2 to 6 p.m. at their complex located at 13040 Cerise Avenue in Hawthorne.  This is on the same block as the Los Angeles Ale Works brewery.  Fine art, photography, mixed media, fiber arts and live art will all be on display.  Plenty of free parking, live jazz music and food and drink will round out the event.  So, you can check out the art and stop by the brewery for a cold one afterwards.  Sounds like a great Saturday to me.

Hawthorne on South Park
If you ever watch the Comedy Channel, then maybe you have seen an episode of South Park, the comic cartoon show that has a little satire on current events.  One of my loyal readers sent me a clip from an episode that aired last week.  The two young children walked over the hill to see their “future” and they peer down on a comic rendering of the SpaceX headquarters and our very own rocket monument that sits out on Hawthorne Blvd.  Elon Musk and his grand ideas are becoming the future for our world.  Just this week, he announced that they will be taking two citizens on a space vacation around the moon and back.  The cost per ticket was a mere $60 million.  He hopes to get the price down to $200 thousand for a ticket to visit Mars in the not too distant future.  Hawthorne has had a colorful past, but our future looks even more outrageously crazy.

44 Years in Hawthorne
I have referred several times in this column to my German mother-in-law and how we have four generations of our family living in Hawthorne.  That is about to change.  Many of you know that it is difficult when we have a family member who can no longer live on their own.  It’s difficult for them to accept the fact that they may not be able to drive any longer. It’s even harder for them to accept moving from their familiar surroundings and comfortable homes and being relocated to an assisted living facility or to a son or daughter’s house.   Lena has always had her tough, German stubbornness about her.  She went through “the war” back in East Prussia. Along with her three sisters she came to America and made a good life for herself and her family.  After taking a fall on Thanksgiving eve last year she has been recuperating but now is unable to get around too well.  Now, she will be moving to a facility in Chico, CA to be close to her son. She will miss Hawthorne.  We will miss her.  Families are a blessing from God.  He has put us in relationships to love and care for one another.  When separation occurs, that relationship which was taken for granted is now appreciated even more.  We all can look back with blessed memories of the family times that we have shared and thank God for them.  One thing for sure, Lena won’t have to worry about her son-in-law City Clerk embarrassing her when he talks about having cold ones all the time.  (I look forward to my visits to Chico, its home to the Sierra Nevada Brewery. Maybe I can share another cold one with my dear mother-in-law in the near future.)
