The American Cancer Society’s Hawthorne chapter will sponsor their annual “Relay for Life” fundraising walk at Hawthorne High School beginning at 9 a.m. this Saturday, April 30th and concluding 24 hours later at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 1st.  Teams are formed to encourage one another to raise funds together. The opening lap is led by our cancer survivors.

National Day of Prayer
The first Thursday in May has been designated as the National Day of Prayer in America.  The title for this year’s day is “Wake Up America” which is based on the passage from the book of Isaiah 58:1A: “Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet”.  The Hawthorne/Lawndale Ministerial Association is hosting a prayer service on Thursday, May 5 at 7 p.m. at the Church of Nazarene which is located at 4500 El Segundo Blvd.  There will be shared music, messages and prayers led by our local pastors and spiritual leaders.

FREE CERT Training
The Los Angeles County Fire Department is offering Community Emergency Response Team training free of charge to all residents of our area.  The training classes will be starting at 6:30 p.m. this Friday, April 29 and running both Saturday and Sunday full days at the Hawthorne Memorial Center.  You may register on-line at www.fire.lacounty.gov/cert.

Community K9 Dinner
I know it is a few weeks away, but the Hawthorne President’s Council will once again sponsor a Community BBQ Dinner to raise funds for the Hawthorne Police Department’s K9 Unit.  The date is Thursday, May 26th starting at 5 p.m. at the Memorial Center.

Pancake Breakfast #2
You are invited to the 11th Annual “God Bless America” Pancake Breakfast to be held at Ascension Lutheran Church this Saturday, April 30 from 7-11 a.m.  I have been involved with putting on pancake breakfasts since 1984 when we first started hosting a breakfast for Lutheran High School in Inglewood.  The price has remained the same $5 per person.  You can’t find a cheaper or better breakfast in town.  Ascension Lutheran is located at 17910 S. Prairie Avenue in north Torrance, just south of Artesia.

Congratulations to Our Neighbors to the South
The City of Lawndale sponsored their annual Youth Day Parade this past Saturday.  I watched many of the marching band and dance groups parade by as I was stuck in the traffic congestion on Hawthorne Blvd. It was great to see a large group of residents lining the parade route and so many youth participating.  Congratulations to our neighbors in Lawndale for hosted a successful event each year.
